Gert Kilian - Laurent Marc - Frédéric Cavallin

MAGIC MALLETS

Colourful music at the crossroads of Africa, the Caribbean, India and unexplored continents. Here we meet emblematic members of the melodic percussion family: the ancestor, the african balafon, it's digital descendant the MIDIvibraphone, and their West Indian cousin the steelpan. They are accompanied by rhythmic percussion: drums and Indian tablas. They share the same languages - those of jazz and world music, interpreted by Gert Kilian on balafon, steel pan, derbouka, krins and vocals, Laurent Marc on MIDI vibraphone and Frédéric Cavallin on drums and tablas.

Gert Kilian (balafon, steel-pan, krins, composition)
Gert travels between musical worlds - world music, jazz and pop. Initially a drummer and percussionist, his musical research trips to West Africa, Papua New Guinea, Australia, India and Trinidad & Tobago led him to his favourite instrument, the balafon, one of the ancestors of keyboard percussion. After nineteen albums with Drumpact, Kâla, Les Zoulousains, Looping, Argile & african heat, Orexis and Voyages Africains, he founded the Magic Mallets trio with Laurent Marc, who plays the Midi vibraphone, the latest descendant in the family of melodic percussion instruments, and drummer and Indian tabla player Frédéric Cavallin. Author of the method "Balafon Beat"and the DVD "The Balafon with Aly Keita & Gert Kilian".
